FAQ

Were there questions that you’ve always wanted to ask From A to 4z, but were just to shy to?  I’ve compiled a list of my most frequently asked questions (FAQ):

1. Is that your real hair colour?

Yes it is.

2.How long have you been natural?

I’ve been natural since October 2011.

3.  How were you able to retain your length with shorter hair?

My hair was really short when I BC’d, so as it started to grow out I’d wear it in a picked out afro.  As soon as my hair was long enough to protective style I started wearing two strand twists.

4.  How long do you keep your twists in?

I usually wear my two strand twists 1 to 2 weeks at a time.

5.  Do you do any other protective styles other than two strand twists?

I sometimes wear single braids, but I prefer the versatility that two strand twists provide.

6.  How often do you protective style?

I protective style 95-98% of the time.  However, over the years, I have found that protective styling has played an important role in my retention.

7.  Can you wash your hair in twists?  Won’t they unravel?  Won’t they tangle?

Yes, it is possible to wash your hair in twists.  This is the primary way that I wash my hair.  I find that by keeping my hair bound in twists I am able to properly cleanse my hair without it getting tangled.  My twists only unravel when I wash in jumbo twists, but I think that it’s because of the cottony texture of my hair.

8.  Do you wear extensions?

No.  I love the way that they look and I used to wear them many years ago, but due to to tight installations I suffered from traction alopecia.  I also find them very itchy even if I soak them in apple cider vinegar (ACV) and wash and condition the hair.  One day, I might try installing myself but I don’t think that I would end up wearing them for very long.

9.  How often do you trim your hair?

I trim my own hair every 3 to 4 months and I use a sharp pair of  hair scissors that I use only to cut my hair.

10.  What products can I use to make my hair grow long?

I don’t believe that there is any magical potion that can help your hair to grow long.  However, there are plenty of products out there that can help you maintain your moisture and protein levels.  I believe that the techniques that you use in styling and managing your hair are just as important as products that you use.  Lastly, you just need to be patient and committed.  It takes time to see your growth, but chances are that you won’t see it if you don’t stay committed to your process.
