Over the past nine years, my favourite 4c hair products and regimen have changed very little. There have been times when I’ve tried new products — some I have kept and others I have stopped using. In the end, there are only a handful of products that I have remained faithful to. The following are my staple products.

Kaolin Clay
Kaolin clay is my most favourite 4c hair product. Also known as “china clay” or “white clay”, I use “kaolin clay” for weekly hair and scalp cleanses. I find this finely milled clay to be much easier to rinse through my hair than rhassoul or bentonite clay. It’s much gentler, too. To make my weekly cleanser, I like to mix my clay with goat’s milk powder. It provides extra exfoliation for my scalp and also lowers the pH of my mixture. Like other healing clay, this clay is also great for face masks.
Komaza Hair Care Moja Moisturizing Shampoo
I really like Komaza Hair Care’s Moja Moisturizing Shampoo this shampoo because it’s super gentle on my strands. It’s sulphate free and pH balanced to 4.5. I find that this shampoo cleanses my hair without stripping it of its natural oils. I use this shampoo on my days when I use Komaza Hair Care Protein Hair Strengthener.
Giovanni Smooth as Silk Shampoo
For those times when I don’t feel like mixing clay, I turn to Giovanni Smooth as Silk Shampoo. This Shampoo is quite gentle on my hair and I don’t feel like it strips my hair of all of its natural oils. This shampoo is lauryl and laureth sulfate-free, colour-safe, and vegan friendly.
Conditioners
Komaza Hair Care Moja Moisturizing Conditioner
This is my favourite hair conditioner. It is super moisturizing and has a lot of slip. I use this on the days when I use Komaza Hair Care Protein Hair Strengthener.
Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner
Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner is the moisturizing conditioner in Giovanni’s Eco Chic Hair Care product line up. As a regular use conditioner, I find it affordable and does the job. It doesn’t have as much slip as Komaza Hair Care, but it provides me with the conditioning ingredients that I need to maintain healthy hair. I’ve recently discovered that by adding raw honey to this product, I can take my final moisture and smoothness to the next level. I use this conditioner with every weekly wash. It’s colour-safe and vegan friendly.
Giovanni Direct Leave-In Weightless Moisture Conditioner
Giovanni Direct Leave-In Weightless Moisture Conditioner is a vegan friendly, moisturizing leave-in conditioner. I find it to be really heavy when used alone, however when diluted with water, it becomes the perfect spritz for my LCO method.
Protein Treatments
Aubrey Organics Balancing Protein Conditioner (Old Formula)
Aubrey Organics GPB Protein Balancing Conditioner is a protein/moisture balancing conditioner that provides a light protein treatment. Formulated with a blend of glycogen protein, milk protein, and moisturizing botanicals, this conditioner strengthens your strands while infusing it with moisture. I use this conditioner if I’m due for a protein treatment but don’t have a lot of time to devote to a full hair washing/protein treatment. This treatment takes only 2 to 5 minutes to complete.
Komaza Hair Care Protein Hair Strengthener
Made by black-owned, small business Komaza Hair Care, Komaza Hair Care’s Protein Hair Strengthener has been great for adding strength to my strands. I would consider it a medium strength protein treatment and I can immediate feel the difference to my hair when I wash it out. The treatment process takes 20 minutes and I use this treatment monthly.
Scalp Exfoliating Treatments
Hair health is important, but so is scalp health, so every so often, I like to treat my scalp to something special. Komaza Hair Care’s Pona Hair & Scalp Treatment is my exfoliator of choice. Unlike sugar and salt scrubs which can be abrasive and cause micro damage to scalp skin as well as hair strands, Pona Hair & Scalp Treatment is a mild liquid exfoliator which gently removes Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), dead skin, and build up from the scalp’s surface. I often use this a a pre-poo on the days that I am doing a protein treatment.
Moisturizers
DIY Moisturizer
After the birth of my first son, I started looking into various means of creating my own “cleaner” hair and body products. I also took this time to study the needs of my hair and come up with a product that would suit my hair’s needs. The moisturizer that I use is formulated without coconut oil, shea butter, or aloe vera – all of which my hair isn’t particularly fond of.
Oils
Broccoli Seed Oil
Broccoli seed oil has become my favourite carrier oil for sealing moisture into my hair. This oil is a light, non-greasy oil and is used as a substitute for dimethicone in hair care formulations. When used in large quantities, it tends to smell a lot lie over-cooked broccoli.
